Week 10 - Taking care of the earth

The book,  Brother Eagle, Sister Sky, gave the children an understanding of how our actions might affect the earth.

The starberry game, played with blueberries, taught the children that 3/4 of the earth is water and out of the 1/4 that is land, a third of that is mountains, a third is desert, leaving only 1/3 which is habitable.

The garden is flourishing. A few of the cabbage out leaves have holes in them, but even after much searching, the culprit was not found!  The children transplanted petunias (which hopefully will deter squash bugs), weeded, and watered.

 We have blooms on the squash, peas, and peppers, baby cabbages, and even one tiny pepper.

Week 9 - All About Bees

An exciting day--we had a beekeeper, Bobby Cornelius, speak to our group. The children learned many interesting facts about bees. Mr. Cornelius brought samples of his equipment and housing for the children to examine.

The children were fascinated!  He even brought his bee hat--one of the group demonstrated for us.

In the garden the children harvested more lettuce and radishes. They planted cucumbers. Of course they weeded and watered. They are getting to be expert weeders.

We are acquiring quite a following. Several chidlren have expressed an interest in joining us next year.

Drop by the library and see the progress. Little baby cabbages are forming, the peas are beginning to bloom, and the onions are almost ready for harvest!

Week 8- Parts of Plants-Continued

We continued this week with our study of the parts of plants. We learned about the roles of stems, leaves, and flowers.

Our book selection was Tops and Bottoms. The children loved hearing how the rabbit tricked the bear, while learning about the different parts of plants..

The children enjoyed a snack of stems (celery and peanut butter), carrots (roots) and teddy grahams (in honor of the book).

In the garden we planted another tomato plant, rosemary, and oregano. Now for the fun part--harvesting our first crops--lettuce and radishes!

Out the Summerhill Road

In 1946 a young couple is brutally murdered in a a small East Texas town. And now, thirty-four years later, the rumor is that Jackson Morris, who had been the only person of interest in the murders, has come home. Or has he?

When the four women of the Tuesday bridge club hear this rumor, their responses range from a reckless excitement to a shaky uneasiness. There's Isabel, compelling and passionate, who foolishly and inexplicably longs to see Jackson, her first love, again while the seemingly innocent Mary Martha prays that the sheriff will put Jackson's head in a noose. Althought the eternally optomistic Sarah looks to the law to determine Jackson's fate, the fourth woman, an Irish immigrant and a misfit in Cold Springs, is guided by the spirit world, including a cat, in deciding his guilt or innocence.

When a second murder occurs after Jackson's return, Cold Springs reacts with fear and paranoia while the women struggle to protect their friend's reputation and desperately try to find the murderer.

Week 7 - Parts of Plants


We began our class this week by passing around different kinds of roots. The children compared a tap root to a fibrous root. We discussed the functions of a root  such as anchoring the plant in the soil and providing food to the plant.  The children were very interested to see a tiny oak tree with the acorn still attached--the acorn is the seed.

Unfortunately we were forced to end the class early due to bad weather and the threat of tornadoes. Check in next week for the remainder of the lesson! Meanwhile, our garden is growing!!
